Music as a Language: Victor Wooten at TEDxGabriolaIsland

As I got older, a little bit older, and my brothers and I started to tour and play a lot, my mom would ask a question that I never understood really until I got much older and had kids of my own.My Mom would ask us boys, and she was saying, "What does the world need with another good musician?"Think about that.

大きくなるにつれて、

少し大きくなってからは

兄弟達でツアーををすることが多くなってから、

母親がその頃の私には理解できないような

質問をするようになった。

これは私自身子供を持つ身になってから

やっと理解出来たのですが、

「たくさんいるだろうミュージシャンの中で

良いミュージシャンとは何？」

私はそれについて考えていました。

And I'm saying music, but insert your own career.What does the world need with you?It really made me realize that now, as I've got older, music is more than just a language, music is a lifestyle.It's my lifestyle.Don't get me wrong: I'm not talking about the lifestyle a lot of musicians lead.

ミュージシャンの身として

世界は私に何を求めているのだろう。

今大人になって分かるのは、

音楽は言語以上だってことです。

音楽はライフスタイルで、

私自身のライフスタイルです。

誤解して欲しくないのは、

多くのミュージシャンがしている様な

ライフスタイルの事を

言っているのではないのです。

Because we can look back at our musical heroes of the past and realize that they were huge successes in music, but just as huge failures in life.I could name a few of them, but I don't want to upset anybody; but if we think about our heroes, a lot of them were like that.I think our parents were preparing us for something that we didn't know at the time, but I think she could see ahead."What does the world need with another good musician?"

私たちのヒーローだったミュージシャン達は

大きな成功の裏に

生活環境では大きな失敗をしてる人達がいます。

何人か名前を挙げる事が出来ますが、

誰も怒らせたくはありません。

でも私たちのヒーローはそういった人が

多くいました。

私たち兄弟の親はそういった、

私たちが想像もついていないような事に対して

警鐘を鳴らしてくれていました。

いいミュージシャンとは何なのでしょう。

So we're practicing all these hours.We turned our whole house into a music room where all the neighborhood, all the state-wide musicians would show up.We would practice, my parents would spend money they didn'thave to make sure we had the next newest instrument.Every Christmas, Santa would bring the newest thing.What was that about?Was it just so that we could make money?So that we could stand on stage and bask in the glory?realize now, that it is much more than that.

そうこうしている間

私たちは何時間も練習していました。

家を大きな音楽室へと改造して、

近所のミュージシャン達が集まる様になりました。

親はないお金を私たちの楽器に

つぎ込んでくれました。

最新の楽器を持っていられる様にしてくれました。

毎年クリスマスになるとサンタが

最新の楽器を持ってきてくれるのです。

あれはなんだったのでしょう？

私たちがそれを使って

お金を稼げる様にする為でしょうか？

ステージ上で輝ける様にする為でしょうか？

今なら理解出来ます。

そんな小さな話ではないのです。
