この業界に入る事になった経緯
ギターを弾き始めたきっかけについて語っています。

Q.
What drew you to the guitar?
ギターを始めたきっかけはなんですか？
『I started playing when I was about 3 years old. I just grew up in a house where there was always a guitar lying in the corner of the room and my parents liked music. 』
私がギターを始めたのは3歳くらいの時で、
家の片隅には常にギターが置いてあるような家でしたね。
私の親も音楽が好きでした。
『 My dad knew maybe 5 chords. So he shared those with me soon I was old enough to hold a guitar. And once I used up my dads five chord trickbag. I always was kinda curious about music, wanted to learn more about it but we could'nt afford a guitar lessons my dad charitably explaned that as soon as I growned up he was unable to spend time learning more chords so I was basically on my own. 』 私の父親もギターが少し弾けて、
私がギターを持てる程度に成長した頃コードを
5個くらい教えてもらいました。
その頃から音楽に関心を持つようになりました。
ギター習いたかったのですが、
レッスン料を払うことが出来なかったので
独学に頼るしかありませんでした。
『 So actually that was a blessing in disguise because it forced me to just forced me to just work through any piece of recorded music that I could find and listen to it and try and copy it so to this day I consider my self essentially a self taught musician and I can deal with it if someone puts a piece of paper in front of me but the situation 』 ただ、それは意外と私にとってはいい方向に転びました。
独学でやるしかなかったので
耳で聴いた音楽を体得していく能力を養うことが出来ました。
『where I feel the most comfortable is when I can just listen to something and try and understand it on the basis of how it sounds and respond to it with hopefully a fairly direct connection between the sound I hear in my head and what my fingers then know how to do. 』 そしてどの様に音が鳴っているのか、
その音に指がどの様に連動しているのかを
理解する事に関しては非常に自信が付きました。
『So musics always been an intuitive thing for me I regard it in much the same way as the English language it's one of the things I started doing so long ago and started learining in such a similar way that I can't really explain why I took up guitar. I never did we just found each other.』 音楽は常に直感的な物でした。
感覚的にはずっと昔から
習得し始めた言語と同じように習ってきました。
なので、なんでギターを始めたのか
聞かれるとちゃんとした説明が出来なくて、
私がギターを始めたと言うよりは、
ギターと惹かれ合った様な感覚です。

What was your way into the industry?
音楽業界で働く事になったきっかけはなんですか？
『In terms of telling the story in a way that might be helpful to younger listeners. What I asked myself was basically do I have any particular aspect of my skill set which I think is unique to me or would be a particular use to other people rather than saying I can play guitar why isn't everyone employing me』 視聴者の為を思って何か言うとすると、
「なんで私はギターが弾けるのに誰も雇わないんだ？」
という事を考えるのではなく、
自分自身他の人の役に立つ様な
何か特別な能力があるのかを私は問いかけてきた。
『 and following that line of reason I can reach the conclusion my ear is probably the best thing I have and it's fun to play a million notes a second or whatever it's a good circus trick but really the most useful thing I have is that ear that I developed when I was a kid and we could'nt afford guitar lessons. 』 そう言った理由で私は独学の
うちに培った聴力が
私の一番誇れる能力だという結論に至った。
無数の音符を一瞬のうちで弾くのはまるで
サーカス芸の様なものだったけど、
それでも需要があると思った。
『And so I thought what can I do with that? And It seemed logical to try and become a trancriber for guitar magazines because there's a field of human endeavor we're having a good ear is the thing that you're selling basically. Stuff that might sound relatively obvious to me but might be hard for someone else to work out. 』 これを使ってどうしようか考えた時、
聴く能力の高い事を売りにしてるであろう
ギター雑誌の採譜の仕事が
いいんじゃないかって考えついたんだ。
私にとっては当たり前の様な事でも
他の人にとっては難しい事なんじゃないかと思ってね。
『Okay that's a meaningful transaction, let's see if I can get a job as a transcriber of course you buy your local paper and look in the bake pages It's very unlikely that someone's going to be posting a little column inch thing 'urgently wanted transcriber' doesn' work like that. 』 てことで仕事を探し始めるんだけど、
地方紙の裏面にそんな仕事内容が
掲載される事なんてそうそうあるもんじゃない。
『So I just picked a guitar magazine I thought needed transcription more than the others and sent them an example of what I could do and just as a kind of CV if you will and they actually printed it and gave me money and then phoned me a month later and said would you like to do that again with this pieve of music and this continued for several months before I realized ' hang on...this is actually my job.'』 そこで私は採譜の仕事する人が
足りてなさそうなギター雑誌社を選び、
私が何が出来るか採譜のサンプルと履歴書を送ったんだ。
すると彼らはそれを刷って売り、
私にギャラをくれ、そして一ヶ月後くらいに
もう一回やってみるか？と提案してくれた。
これが継続的に続いた頃にふと気が付いたらそれが仕事になっていた。

What have been your most rewarding musical projects?
どの音楽企画があなたにとって
一番やりがいがありましたか？
『Actually the thing I feel rewarding is working with people who want to work with me. People who have some idea what I might bring to the table and who have decided we want that thing you can bring to the table and then it feels like a fruitful collaboration. 』 実は一番やりがいを感じている仕事というのは、
私と仕事をしたいと言ってくれる人と
仕事をする事だったりします。
私が何かアイディアを持ってくるだろうと
期待してくれて、彼らもまた、
私が期待してる様なアイディアを引き合いに出してくる。
そうするととても実りのある
コラボレーションの様に感じるんです。

What projects have been keeping you busy
忙しいなと感じさせる様な企画などはありますか？
『I have done so many gigs over the last couple of years. For the last aristocrats album cycle we did a 128 gigs all over the world. In some pretty interesting far-flung places as soon as we finished that album cycle with the aristocrats and then my bandmates kind of went off and did stuff with the Joe Satriani machine and earily did 128 gigs exactly the same number and to support Joe's later album.』 ここ何年かでたくさんのライブを行いました。
最後にAristocratsで出したアルバムは
世界中様々な場所で合計128回も演奏を行いました。
その後バンドメンバーがジョーサトリアーニと
全く同じ回数の128回ライブを行なって
そのメンバーはジョーのアルバムにも参加していました。
『 Meanwhile I have spent months and months on the road with Hans Zimmer. Living in that world and I just chose to kind of switch off and not think about solo albums or plans for the future 』 その頃私はハンズジマーと何ヶ月もの間一緒に活動していた。
その間はソロアルバムや未来の計画については
なるべく考えないようにしていた。
『I thought I'm going to be surrounded by people from every conceivable musical dicipline I'm just going to try and listen to all of their music collections and exchange ideas' with people who play classical woodwind or peep program modular synths』 そして、私は考えられる限りのたくさんの
音楽分野の人に囲まれていると思った。
木管楽器もそうですし、
打ち込み音楽等もそうでした。
その全ての音楽の集大成に耳を傾け、
彼らと情報を共有しようとした。
『and you know my world just got a whole lot wider so I enjoyed ust exploring that 』 そうする事で私の世界は驚く程に広がり、
私は更にそれを楽しむ事が出来たんです。
