John Mayerのシグネチャーモデルの一つであるPRS社のSilver Sky

こちらのシグネチャーモデルの解説動画かと思ってたら、

ギター上達について語っていたので紹介します。

John Mayer(以下JM)

「Everthing you learn, learn the thing that is the building block for the thing you just learn and that might be scales」

　何を習うにしても、その習いたい事を構成している要素を習った方が良い。そしてそれは曲の一部分をコピーとかじゃなくて、スケールなのかもしれない。」

「trace back 'why you like the thing' and learn the thing that made the thing you like and you will be five times better every time you do that.」

なんでそれが好きなのかを振り返ってみて好きになったその要素を習う。そうすればそれを行うたびに５倍上達する。

「if you just learn my song. lets say I wanna learn 'Gravity' ..........and if all you learn is '........'[playing the Gravity guitar phrase] you don't have an understanding of the guitar. You have a understanding of Gravity.」

Gravityを弾くとしよう。’.....'[JM gravityのリフを弾く]。Gravityは弾けるようにはなるがギター自体に対しての理解（上達）は見込めない。

「understand that that's part of a much larger scale that goes all the way across the neck」

そのリフは指板全体に広がっているスケールの一部だということを理解しないといけない。

「whatever you learn is the tip of the iceberg. Dive under water and find rest of the iceberg and you can rip me off in more fundamental ways」

　習う事は氷山の一角で水中に潜って残りの氷山も見つけないといけない。そうすればもっと根本的に理解（上達）することが出来る。

「i always learn the lick I learn what the root was」

僕はリフを習得するときは毎回ルートが何かを考える。

「what's the root you can put the lick in any key」

　ルートが何か分かればそのリフをどのキーにも入れられる

「You will start developing your own theory. If you do that you won't need to learn music theory because you would be teaching yourself a really relative understanding of the guitar」

いずれ自分で自分の理論を構築しだす。それが出来始めたら音楽理論を勉強する必要なんてない。何故ならそれとほとんど同じような理解を自分自身で編み出せるようになるから。
