How do you keep yourself inspired?

どうやって常に刺激を

受けているようにしているのですか？

TE.

『It is a very important thing to be in a place of inspiration. And when you're not there it's difficult. So even on my worst night when I am either tired or there's something I'm not inspired today, even then I can still do a show that the people like. Because I have the songs. I can stand on my songs and on my arrangements even on my worst night it'll still be a show that people will like but every night you go out there hoping for this magic and you usually get it.』

常に刺激を受け続ける事はとても大切で、

自分の身の状況を常に

その場所においておく事が重要です。

そして、その状況に自分を於いておけない場合は

とても難しいのです。

私は自分にとって最悪の日や

疲れ果てた日があったとしても、

人々が喜ぶ様なショーをする事が出来ます。

何故なら私には私の曲達があるからです。

その曲達やアレンジ達を演奏すれば

最悪の日でも良いショーが出来るのです。

毎晩その魔法が起きると信じて演奏すれば

大抵はそれを手に入れる事が出来ます。

『It's not something you plan you just go out and you feel what's happening in the room right now you know. But the good thing is every audience is differant every hall is differant, all the equipment we use is different every night so it's not as predictable as you would imagine even if I do 300 shows a year. Every night is differant and it's hard to imagine that but it's true.』

それは決して計画的なものではなくて、

その場で何が起きているのかを感じるんです。

良い事に良い事にお客さんは毎回違うし、

会場も毎回違う、機材も変わるし、

毎晩予想も出来ない様なショーになっている。

私のように年間３００回のショーを行っていても

どのショーも全く違うよ。

想像しづらいだろうけど本当なんだ。

『And so, it's the poeple and the feeling of playing to the poeple that keeps me inspired and every day I wake up in the morning and my first thought is I've got a show tonight that's my firsth thought. Then where's my coffee.』

要するに人々とその感情が

私に常に刺激をくれる要素で、

毎日朝起きるとこう思うんだ。

「今晩はショーがあるぞ」ってね。

その後に、「モーニングコーヒーはどこだ」

ってなる訳だけど笑

Descrive your songwriting process?

どのようにして曲を書いているのか教えて下さい。

TE.

『Every song is differant. Some songs are written because I had an idea. For instance there's a song called drive time and I've walked around the house going '♪~playing his song~♪.' I had this little turn around. So A, C#,F#,B, and I really liked it I played it for many hours thinking. Then I liked this idea what am I going to do with it now. I have to tell a story so'♪~playing his song~♪.' Therefore and so I wrote this song because I had this idea. 』

どの曲も違います。

曲によっては初めからアイディアが

あるものもあります。

例えば、Drive Timeという曲は

家の中を歩き回りながら

A,C#m,F#m,Bのリフを弾き続けていて

それがとても気に入っていた。

ずっと弾いていて

じゃぁどうしようかってなったときに

なにかストーリーを付けないといけないと

思ったんだ。

そう言った具合に、

初めからアイディアがあって

曲が完成したのもあるね。

『There's another song I wrote called Ruby's Eyes and I was very inspire by come chords from James Bond movie called Moon Raker the first chord was this beautiful chord. And the voice went '♪~playing his song~♪.' I thought that was so beautiful and so what the hell is that chord. I grabbed my guitar I found it switch the TV off and I wrote the song so I '♪~playing his song~♪.' That's the introduction. So that's the James Bond chord tha gave me the idea by dinner . 』

違う曲でRuby's Eyesって曲があるんだけど、

これはジェームスボンドの曲影響されていて、

最初のコードがとても綺麗で、

一体どんなコードを使ってるんだ

ってなったときに

ギターをつかんでテレビを消して

曲を作ってみたんだ。

そうやって晩ご飯の前に

テレビからアイディアをもらって

出来た曲もあるよ。

『When I write songs. I don't imagine I'm writing a song for a solo guitar. I'm Imaging that I'm writing a song for a singer and a band. The band and the singer are in my head so that's why my song sound like, poeple say have you got words for that song. Then I know I'm onto something and I always try to write in a way that you want to sing something with it.』

私は曲を作るときは

ソロギターの為に曲を作っている

という意識はありません。

どちらかというと歌手やバンドの為に

曲を書いています。

その歌手やバンドは私の頭の中にいて

よく「その曲に歌詞とかってあるんですか？」

と訪ねられる事があって

それを訪ねられると、

上手い事いっているんだなと実感しますね。

私は常に一緒に歌いたくなる様な

曲を作る事を心がけています。

『Chet Atkins always said to me. Can you sing it can you hum it you know. When I write a new song I say ' Hey I wrote a new song' and the first thing he say is can you sing it. and that was always the guide. 』

チェットアトキンスはいつも私に

こう言っていました。

「その曲は歌える？口ずさめる？」

私が新しい曲をもって

彼に「新しい曲だよ」と言うと

彼の最初の言葉はいつもそれでした。

それが私にとって大きな導きになっています。

『I'm more interested in moving the world basically and so I listen to people whose songs and whose song writing really touches a lot of poeple.　People like Elton John, Biily Joel's, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Carole king, Justin Timberlake. Poeple who write amazing stuff you know and I want to know how they do that. 』

私は世界を動かす事にとても興味があります。

基本的に共感を得ている曲達と

その作曲者の曲を

聴いたりしています。

エルトンジョン、ビリージョエル、

スティービーワンダー、

ジェームズテイラー、キャロルキング、

ジャスティンティンバーレイクなど。

こういった人たちは驚く程見事な曲を

書く人たちで、

それをどうやって書いているのか

是非とも知りたい。

『If look at Eric Clapton's tear in heaven it's one of the great pieces of the last 20 years. The bridge of that song is so beautiful and it does a beautiful key change and makes its way back for the solo and that is a masterful song writing. It's a simple song and they're usually the hardest ones to write To say alot with a little, it takes a great artistry and a guy like Eric he definitely has that.』

たとえばエリッククラプトンの

Tears In Heavenを見てみると

それは過去２０年程で

最も偉大な曲のうちの一つだと思う。

とくに曲のブリッジ部分はとても美しくて、

綺麗に転調するんだ。

そして流れるようにギターソロに戻って行く

これはまさに匠の作曲だね。

単純な曲でたくさんを伝える事程難しくて、

とても卓越した芸術性が必要で、

エリックの様な人には

確実にそれがある。
